Adrian, our poet-neighbour from 'Over The Hedge’, composed this sonnet for Annie for her last birthday:
NOTES ON A BIRTHDAY
Through the birdlit skywashed trees
we list for notes in case of one going spare
your voice adrift on summer breeze
across the hedge from over there
Carole’s out with piles of washing
I’m planting beans and bamboo canes
here you come with opera sploshing
surprised are we in Colwall’s lanes
Dabnabbit, Annie, nice one, thanks
the moles and robins listen
we watch our veg in serried ranks
see beetroot turn and smile and glisten
as music peeps ‘cross window ledge
you are the gal across our hedge
